Hopefully the enemy will extend a useful fraction of their force out looking for the fighter's base (remember most rebel bases are not mobile), with a view to neutralizing it. Typically, the captain in this situation will deploy his fighters to harass surrounding installations, in an effort to draw the enemy out. Owing to it's significant fighter complement, another use for this vessel is using it as a remote operations base, although not for extended durations.
It also has enough raw speed to be able to flee from anything it cannot defeat. It packs enough firepower to beat any ship it's own size and pose a real threat to ships larger than it.
The workhorse cruiser of the fleet, designed to get from point A to point B very quickly and turn whatever it finds there into molten slag and proceed on to point C as much speed as before - the very essence in fact of the strike cruiser.
